Huawei’s Triple-Leica Camera ‘P20 Pro’ Smartphone Teardown Reveals Inner Secrets
By Yoon Sann Wong, 11 Apr 2018
Teardown site ifixit gets under the layers of Huawei’s latest ‘P20 Pro’ flagship smartphone—which surpassed Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ to become the best smartphone camera on market according to DxO Mark’s ranking—in this teardown initiative.
The step-by-step revelation checks out its motherboard, triple Leica-made cameras, and chips, amongst others. Some highlights include the teardown process sans heat, the cameras’ fast focusing (step eight), as well as the relatively easy replacement of its 4,000 mAh at 3.82V battery (step 11), which outshines those of the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and iPhone X.
ifixit concludes that many of the ‘P20 Pro’ components are modular and can be easily as well as independently replaced. While battery restoration is certainly possible, this requires some time and effort. On the downside, the smartphone’s glass front and back calls for more careful handling, lest you’d want to risk breakage. Replacing the screen requires overcoming two layers of adhesive and some deconstruction.
All things considered, the site unexpectedly gave the smartphone a reparability score measuring four out of 10, which likewise took some readers by surprise.
