A new “museum” in Indonesia is feeling the heat for its uncannily similar attractions to well-recognized artworks.
Rabbit Town garnered much attention online after posting photographs revealing its installations that bear great similarity to artworks by Chris Burden and Yayoi Kusama.
The tourist attraction promotes its ‘Love Light’, where a group of street lamps are arranged in a grid and its sole purpose: for an Instagram-worthy photo. The installation is nearly identical to Chris Burden’s ‘Urban Light’, which has stood at the entrance of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art since 2008.
Diet Prada has called out Rabbit Town, and posted a comparison image with the caption, “Hey @rabbittown.id … it’s cool you wanna bring some LA flavor to Indonesia, but blocking the people tagging @lacma in the comments doesn’t really go with chill West coast vibes… Chris Burden’s ‘Urban Lights’ installation is pretty iconic lol.”
The museum has also lifted Kusama’s ‘The Obliteration Room’ where users surround themselves in a white room adorned with colorful stickers resembling polka dots.
Rabbit Town did not stop there, however. It has also copied another installation from the Museum of Ice Cream (MOIC), by creating a pink space similar to the ‘California’ room in MOIC.
Instagram’s legal department has already been notified by MOIC’s representative about the plagiarism of different artists’ intellectual property and is attempting to shut down Rabbit Town’s account.
The spokesperson from MOIC has also sent a cease-and-desist letter to Rabbit Town.
