The war between Apple and Samsung is the tech world’s equivalent to the fierce rivalry between McDonald’s and Wendy’s—it’s brazen and high on savagery.
Following Apple’s mission to get Android users to “switch to iPhone,” Samsung has countered the move with a new commercial asking iPhone owners to “upgrade to Galaxy.”
Despite being a Galaxy S9 ad, the iPhone 6—deemed one of Apple’s most reliable smartphone models yet—receives the most air time in the clip.
Samsung ridicules the 2014 device for its lagginess, to prove one point: its Galaxy phones are as quick as its wits.
The video centers a woman who frustrates airport security and her flight seat neighbor because her phone isn’t as efficient as the Galaxy S9.
Fed up, she visits an Apple Store, where she meets an employee—Samsung didn’t bother to censor out the logo on his uniform—who gives her some very unhelpful advice: “You can turn on the performance management feature, but it may lead to unexpected shutdowns… or you could just upgrade.”
Most notably, the lady’s mother understands her pain and texts her to move on from the iPhone 6.
She switches to the Samsung Galaxy S9 instead, and lo and behold—she’s happy.
Though Samsung seems to have won this ad battle, the champion isn’t as clear-cut in the ongoing Apple versus Samsung US$1 billion design patent battle, which has shed light on the iPhone’s secretive design process and placed designers in the hot seat.
