Microsoft has officially confirmed the rumor that it has acquired GitHub, the world’s largest developer community. The latter received a payout of US$7.5 billion.
Following the announcement, GitHub’s direct competitor, GitLab, saw a surge of 13,000 GitHub projects being ported over to its platform in a single hour.
“We’re seeing 10 times the normal daily amount of repositories moving to GitLab,” GitLab tweeted on Monday, the day Microsoft purchased GitHub. Positive that more developers would make the migration, it added, “We’re scaling our fleet to try to stay up.”
Sid Sijbrandij, CEO at GitLab, told Motherboard, “Within the past seven days, we have imported nearly 50,000 projects. We’ve scaled up the servers for GitLab.com three times already.”
Developers have expressed concerns about the open-source platform being bought out, especially by a large corporation like Microsoft—though the tech giant has since assured that the core of GitHub will remain the same.
“GitHub will retain its developer-first ethos and will operate independently to provide an open platform for all developers in all industries,” Microsoft addressed in a press release.
