Swedish furniture giant IKEA has announced its plans to phase out single-use plastic products by 2020.
Not only will it cease its distribution of plastic straws, cups, plates, drink stirrers and cutlery, but also the sale of plastic products such as plastic-coated paper plates, cups, and freezer bags.
IKEA will impose this ban across all its global stores, and aim to design products that can be recycled and repaired. The company explained that the ban is part of a broader sustainability strategy to create products using renewable materials and to go emission-free by 2025.
To add, IKEA is set to offer more non-meat meals and snacks in all its stores. Torbjorn Loof, chief executive at Inter IKEA Group, said that the company is capable of inspiring a large number of consumers to lead better lives, given its size and reach.
IKEA is committed to working together in achieving a greener environment—from its raw materials to its customers.
