North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un landed in Singapore for the US-North Korea summit on Sunday. With one day to spare before meeting US President Donald Trump, he was taken around the city by the country’s ministers to enjoy its iconic tourist attractions.
Kim was accompanied by Singapore’s Foreign Minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, as well as Education Minister Ong Ye Kung during his visit to one of the nation's highlights, Gardens by the Bay—and the trio pulled the ultimate touristy move of leaning in for a selfie.
Balakrishnan posted a photo of the three beaming at the camera on his Instagam, captioning it with, “#JalanJalan,” which is slang for “stroll” in Malay.
Ong followed suit with another selfie. “Guess where? Honored to be able to show Singapore to our special guest,” he wrote on Instagram.
In both uploads, Kim looked completely in his element, even though they were seemingly his first casual photos ever snapped in public. It was also the farthest he’s traveled since taking power, and for what it’s worth, he appeared to be wholly at ease. It seems like a milestone was already made ahead of the big event.
Balakrishnan visited North Korea last week at the request of Ri Hong Yo, Foreign Minister of the country. When he returned, he described the city of Pyongyang as, “clean, modern, and beautiful with clear evidence of ongoing construction around the city. There are many high-rise buildings and modern designs… Clearly, the government has been hard at work all these decades to upgrade their infrastructure.”
