Huge 4-Story Whale Sculpture Gets Painstakingly Made From Copious Ocean Plastics
By Yoon Sann Wong, 02 Jul 2018

Five tons of ocean plastic currently sits inside a main canal in the Belgium city of Bruges. It takes the form of a gigantic, four-story-tall whale sculpture.
The artwork was made by architecture and design company STUDIOKCA, which was behind the ‘Head in the Clouds’ structure that revealed the number of plastic bottles discarded in New York City every hour.
‘Skyscraper (the Bruges Whale)’ is the firm’s most ambitious project to date. It’s been put up as part of the 2018 ‘Bruges Triennial’ event, following the theme ‘Liquid City’. The Brooklyn-based agency decided to spotlight the copious amounts of plastic waste that is being dumped into the earth’s “Liquid Cities”—that are the oceans—from metropolises worldwide.
Together with Hawaii Wildlife Fund, STUDIOKCA spent four months collecting ocean plastics to build the mammoth whale artwork that overlooks the city’s notable Jan Van Eyck Square.
