Dior’s Embroidered Coat Bears Striking Similarity To Romanian Designers’ Works
By Izza Sofia, 09 Jul 2018
Christian Dior has come under a barrage of criticism after it was discovered that pieces from its 2017 pre-fall collection bear uncanny similarities to traditional Romanian designs from the Northeastern region of Bihor. The allegedly plagiarized designs were also retailing for sky-high prices.
One Dior embroidered coat, which looks incredibly alike those from Bihor, is said to have carried a price tag totaling €30,000 (US$35,300). Romanian fashion group La Blouse Roumaine has urged Dior via Twitter to give credit to the traditional Romanian dressmakers.
In response, fashion magazine Beau Monde created a ‘Bihor Couture’ campaign to urge luxury brands to clearly give credit to original, independent designers, rather than steal from them.
Under this initiative, it produced the hilarious video below that shows the original designers criticizing the Dior replica for its price and model’s choice of footwear in Dior’s ad.
The video highlights that many of these major luxury brands do not give credit to original designers, who have painstakingly brought these ideas to life. Stealing designs will not fund the poor community and, unfortunately, can cause cherished traditions to die.
‘Bihor Couture’ has been listed as a brand that sells “authentic items and returns money to local communities.” The traditional designers have also called on global trendsetters to give their brand a try, and sent a representative to the 2018 Paris Fashion Week to talk about their work.
We ask the house of @dior to #givecredit to the Romanian artisans and fairly compensate them for using their traditional designs in 2017 Pre Fall collection. #Dior #Bihor #BihornotDior pic.twitter.com/fpqO0tzDzx— La blouse roumaine (@romanianblouse) June 28, 2018

For years, big fashion houses have been using inspiration from local cultures. The problem is that nothing comes back to the communities of craftsmen, struggling to keep traditions alive.... https://t.co/dQzfk60j8H
#givecredit @dior @Edward_Enninful @voguemagazine @BritishVogue @ELLEmagazine what’s sad is that you don’t even mention Romania let alone Bihor. What’s so hard in doing that?! You sell for Thousands £€$, even if you were to put the country on the map & acknowledge the couture!— Diana (@Diana47034749) July 5, 2018
