Disney has laid ongoing uncertainty to rest by confirming that director James Gunn will not return for the third instalment of Guardians of the Galaxy.
This is in spite of support from Guardians of the Galaxy’s cast members—including an open letter signed by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff and Vin Diesel—and a petition urging Disney to rehire James Gunn.
According to Variety’s exclusive, the resolution was made following a meeting between studio chairman Alan Horn and Gunn.
Horn has been adamant not to restore Gunn as director for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, which will now seek a new director to fill Gunn’s role.
Marvel president Kevin Feige was out of town and not present at this meeting, according to insiders. Contrary to rumors that Feige had supported Gunn’s return, sources tell Variety that the Marvel president apparently stood alongside Disney’s decision not to reinstate Gunn for the third installation of the series.
Roughly one month ago, Gunn was let go by Disney after several of Gunn’s now-deleted tweets—dating from between 2009 and 2012—that joked about pedophilia and rape were dug up by far-right supporters.
Disney found that the remarks did not mesh well with its family-friendly values and were particularly unacceptable in light of the ‘#MeToo’ movement.
In a statement, Horn explained, “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”
Filming for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was initially scheduled to begin at the start of 2019, though it’s unclear if the change in director will postpone the production schedule. It is also likely that Gunn’s original script for the film will be used for this latest instalment—a move that Bautista strongly supports and has threatened to quit otherwise.
