Do brands get “edgy” when it comes to making font choices? Further, is there a difference between typefaces people like and typefaces people use?
Since most people have very different ideas about what the ideal typeface should encompass, free icon library Icons8 decided to conduct its own research and find out if there were any parallels among the sites of top startups on Product Hunt.
For its study titled ‘Fonts That People Actually Use’, the brand dissected the websites of 737 winning startups, stripping down their CSS scripts and reviewing their font-face attributes.
At the end of its evaluation, it found thousands of different typefaces and picked the top 50, as well as looked for the most common 50 that paired with them.
Remarkably, startups love using system fonts, particularly those from the Google Fonts library. These include ‘Open Sans’, ‘Roboto’, ‘Lato’ and ‘Montserrat’.
Two of the above typefaces, ‘Roboto’ and ‘Montserrat’, were among the most misspelled resources. People named them ‘Rpboto’ and ‘Montserray’.
‘Helvetica Neue’ and ‘Consolas’ turned out to be the most favored combination.
Thankfully for humankind, none of these 737 brands used ‘Comic Sans’ on their sites.
Could typeface choice be the secret sauce to the success of these top startups? Check out the results of the interesting study here.
