Yesterday Donald Trump Jr. took to Instagram with a doctored image of Nike’s Colin Kaepernick ad that’s already helped the sports brand rake in a whooping US$43 million in media exposure.
Trump Jr.’s self-proclaimed “fix” replaces the face of the former NFL player with that of his dad. The black-and-white portrait comes accompanied with the words from the original print, shown on the left in the image above, that reads, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.”
Unsatisfied by this edit, Berlin-based art director Tony Futura—who’s worked with major brands such as Red Bull, Coca Cola, eBay and previously created these imaginative NFSW photo mashups—took to creating his own version featuring Trump’s portrait captured by photographer Marco Grob.
Here, Futura’s no-holds-barred replacement phrase reads, “Believe in something. Even if it means to fuck everything up.” This sits above a modified Nike ‘Swoosh’ logo with the word “TRUMP” and the slogan “Just doing it.”
His caption reads, “just believe[,] good to see, there actually are brands and people, who have no fear to stand for their attitude. thank you @kaepernick7 and @nike for this. *** fun fact: trump supporters try to take the nike ad and turn it into an own slogan. plain stupid.”
In addition to far-reaching media exposure, Nike’s controversial decision to feature Kaepernick as the face of its 30th anniversary campaign has resulted in a response by Trump, some of the most brutal memes, and a recreation of the ad by artiste 50 Cent featuring rapper Eminem, who’s currently en route to topping the Billboard 200 chart with his surprise album Kamikaze.
