James Gunn Was Apparently Reluctant To Direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Directing a Marvel movie comes with a lot of pressure.
Aside from managing fans’ expectations, the director has to produce a story that is equally satisfying as its prequels, especially when the first two installments of Guardians of the Galaxy were huge successes.
With this sizeable challenge to create Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn “might actually be relieved” that he does not have to direct the final installment of the movie.
Gunn was reportedly hesitant to direct Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy initially. In May 2017, Gunn said he almost didn’t take it up as he felt it wasn’t a “good idea.” The hesitation stemmed from the fact that character ‘Rocket Racoon’ felt like “‘Bugs Bunny’ in the middle of The Avengers.”
He changed his mind after finding a way to put the character into play. Gunn, however, never sounded thrilled to be part of the project. Just before Guardians 2 hit theaters, he was asked about plans for Guardians 3, to which Gunn replied he was only concerned about the second installation. Marvel had spoken to him about continuing the next installment, but he was unsure about taking it up.
In June 2016, rumors about Marvel hiring a new director for the third installment began circulating. Gunn explained that he was reluctant on returning for Vol 3 as directing Vol 2 had been “emotionally exhausting.”
He added that there would still be Guardians 3 but he needed to figure out over the following few weeks if he wanted to spend the next three years doing Guardians or directing another major movie instead.
Gunn admitted that killing off Michael Rooker’s character ‘Yondu’ in the film was too much for him to handle. Gunn and Rooker are close friends and making the third edition without Rooker made Gunn less eager to return to set.
From “a storytelling perspective,” killing off ‘Yondu’ was apparently the hardest choice he had ever made. Gunn tried going through scenes to revive the character but felt it would “cheapen” the movie.
Now that Gunn has been dismissed by Disney, the director might actually be relieved that he will not have to direct Guardians 3.
