BBC Two Rebrands With Artists’ Reimaginations Of Voluptuous ‘2’ For Idents

BBC Two, the BBC’s “highbrow” television channel, has been bestowed its first identity refresh in 20 years. The invigorating transformation aims to reflect the network’s alternative worldviews and “unorthodox DNA.”
The makeover is the result of efforts from the company’s in-house agency, BBC Creative, and branding agency Superunion, which recently aided in the rebrand of the Ad Council in the US.
The channel’s revamp is most apparent with the 16 new abstract idents that speak of its “contemporary and almost stimulating” nature.
Each graphic was created by a renowned British or international animator, with one iteration hailing from Aardman Animations, the studio that brought you Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Chicken Run.
In place of the numerous visuals that plainly displayed the number two, the new animations—which will be screened between programs—are subtler and portray it in a more sensual light; you can hardly notice the graphics shaping to form the digit. This channel is certainly not second best.
BBC Two’s Controller Patrick Holland describes, “We have been working to reinvigorate BBC Two, making it the home of the most urgent documentaries, the most brilliantly crafted dramas, the most mischievous comedies, the most eye-opening history and science.”
“The new channel branding reflects this constantly eclectic and stimulating mix of programing and I am so excited to see it help define this next stage of the channel’s evolution.”
Check out how the channel’s visual identity has morphed to mirror its unconventional, thought-provoking streak. The new look is slated to take over the channel beginning Thursday, 27 September.
