Google Painstakingly Recreates Original 1998 Garage Office For 20th Anniversary
By Yoon Sann Wong, 27 Sep 2018
Google turns 20 this year. To celebrate, the search giant has provided nostalgic throwbacks to when it made its humble beginnings in 1998.
In this meticulous street view creation, Google takes you inside Susan Wojcicki’s garage on Santa Margarita, Menlo Park, which doubled as an office back in the day for founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
Here, a familiar Search box displayed on an aged “CRT” computer monitor greets you, shown above. A whiteboard with the words “Google’s Worldwide Headquarters” sits inside the bedroom or main office. On another whiteboard, you’ll get a peek at the brand’s logo update back in 1998.
As the team expanded to six people, their workspaces spilled over into the three small bedrooms on the ground level. Take the tour below or through this link.
For comparison, you can check out how the original space looked like in 1998 via the archive video recorded by Harry, Google’s sixth employee, below.
