McDonald’s Reacts To Banksy Art That ‘Self-Destructed’ Right After $1.4M Auction
By Yoon Sann Wong, 09 Oct 2018
Anonymous British street artist Banksy made headlines over the weekend after one of the creative’s most iconic paintings self-destructed mere seconds after being auctioned off for US$1.4 million at an evening sale by major art dealer Sotheby’s.
In what many are describing as one of the most brilliant art pranks to date, Banksy’s Girl with Balloon painting passed through a shredder concealed within its frame, shortly after the hammer went down.
“It appears we’ve just got Banksy’ed,” said Sotheby’s senior director Alex Branczik, who added that its ruin might have, in fact, doubled its value. “It’s certainly the first piece to be spontaneously shredded as an auction ends.”
Banksy revealed how the artwork destroyed itself through a video shared to the artist’s official Instagram account.
As the news continues to amuse and inspire the art world, fast food giant McDonald’s Austria has responded to the commotion with this spinoff ad, shown above, made by creative agency DDB, Vienna, which shared the graphic to its Facebook on 8 October.
Update (11 October, 9:10AM PST): Elsewhere in the world, another McDonald’s French fries art, shown below, inspired by the Banksy prank was also shared on 8 October. Posted to Instagram by Richard Agius—senior creative director at Malta-based ad agency TBWA\ANG—the creative work comes with the caption, “Going Once, Going Fries, Gone.”
The graphic design was reshared to TBWA\PARIS’ Twitter account with the words, “Banksy x McDonald’s,” also included below. The ad agency followed up with the cheeky post, “Oops, looks like DDB Austria found the idea of @TBWAANG x @maltesecreative so great that they decided to do... the same.”
