The CW network and Warner Bros. TV have teased the first glimpse at ‘Batwoman’, who will be embodied by Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose.
On Tuesday, The CW unveiled a photo of Rose in a form-fitting black suit adorned with red accents, a batwing cape, and a bat emblem emblazoned on her chest. The heroine is also seen in fiery red locks.
The costume was designed by four-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who also conceptualized the outfits for ‘Supergirl’, ‘Arrow’, and ‘The Flash’.
Rose’s ‘Batwoman’ will make her debut at The CW’s ‘Arrow-verse’ crossover event in December.
A potential series starring the superhero is also in the works; Batwoman is in development with writer Caroline Dries from The Vampire Diaries, and traces an openly gay street fighter, ‘Kate Kane’, who is driven by social justice, in the crime-ridden city of ‘Gotham’.
Rose’s casting makes her the first lesbian actress to play a lesbian superhero in The CW franchise, and follows trans actress Nicole Maines’ enlistment as trans superhero ‘Nia Nal’ in Supergirl.
While the costume has been widely praised by fans, Rose’s casting was unfortunately met with disdain. The actress deleted her social media accounts following backlash of her recruitment in August.
Hello, Batwoman. Hope those boots are comfy because we've got some shit to do. pic.twitter.com/xeetahAuwE— Caroline Dries (@carolinedries) October 9, 2018
Ruby Rose looks awesome as Batwoman, and props to Colleen Atwood for the design. It’s bold, but understated. Good mix of shine and cloth, great little accents that wouldn’t be seen in the comics. And I dig the boots, given Kate is military. Can’t wait.👌 https://t.co/6JiJ4bxj78— Hi, I’m Adam. (@adamteterus) October 9, 2018
I'm glad she isn't wearing heels. I've always found 'em so unrealistic and unfair to s women costumes.— Liliana (@liliteraria) October 9, 2018
