Looking at the new iPhones XS and XS Max solely as cameras, how would they fare against key players in the videography industry? As it seems, Apple’s versions are pretty impressive.
Ignoring the multitudinous functions of the XS, photographer Ed Gregory from YouTube channel Photos In Color decided to judge the feature that Apple seems to be touting the most—by pitting it against Canon’s 2017 ‘Cinema C200’ camera that is priced at around US$10,000.
To conduct his test, Gregory recorded near-identical footage using both cameras, and was surprised at the quality presented by the iPhone XS.
“I don’t know how Apple has managed to pull out so much dynamic range from this [iPhone XS],” he praised.
Gregory cited the iPhone’s ability to capture profound details, such as shadows from a tree branches where sunlight pours in.
Seeing as how affordable the device is in comparison with an actual camera, the photographer had a couple of gripes about the default camera app in the iPhone XS.
For one, highlights were completely blown out in certain scenes of Gregory’s footage. The iPhone camera also tended to over-sharpen imagery, which appeared harsh in contrast with the “cinematic” Canon C200 that helps make skin tones “far more pleasant-looking.”
To put it all in perspective, the iPhone XS encompasses a quality camera that casual photographers or videographers can use without worrying about edits. The Canon C200, on the other hand, is more for pros who need to handle the A to Z of the photography process.
