Controversial Ad Asking Jesus To Donate Organs After Crucifixion Sparks Critique
By Izza Sofia, 17 Oct 2018
A controversial ad created by a pro-donation group showing Jesus Christ agreeing to become an organ donor has ruffled a few religious feathers.
The ad ‘What Would Jesus Do?’ was made to promote the documentary Dying to Live. It shows two armed guards questioning Jesus if he would be willing to donate his organs after being crucified to the cross.
One of the guards says, “We get it. No one wants to talk about death. But your organs could save the lives of up to six people.” Jesus responds, “Obviously I would do it. I am Jesus.” The guards tell him that he should go online to sign the organ donor registry. One guard then attaches a smartphone onto his spear so that Jesus can key in his registration.
The ad concludes with the statement, “Do what Jesus would do.”
According to The Daily Telegraph, the ad has received divided opinions.
Founder of Australia’s Islamic Friendship Association Keysar Trad said that the ad “showed irreverence towards venerated figures” and would cause offense among Muslims and Christians.
However, Anglican Bishop Michael Stead disagreed and said that the ad might have the potential to offend, but insisted that the public should focus on the underlying message instead.
The commercial was made by filmmaker Richard Todd and creative agency REVOLVER. It was based on a study that found 70% of Australians inclined to donate their organs, but only 36% are registered donors. Todd explained that it is important for Australians to know if they are capable of donating by registering online at dyingtolive.com.au.
It is also beneficial for the donor’s family to know about such information as they might need to veto the final decision in the hospital together with the donor during distressing times. Todd added that it would be a “wonderful Christmas present” for those on the transplant list.
