If you often chide yourself because you get distracted more often than what is ideal, don’t reproach yourself.
Chris Bailey, author of newly-published book Hyperfocus: How to Be More Productive in a World of Distraction, urges you to be kinder to yourself, because you can turn your off-time into something more meaningful, as well as train your mind to prevent future distractions.
“Your mind will always wander, so consider how that might present an opportunity to assess how you’re feeling and then to set a path for what to do next.”
One of the quick techniques he mentions in his book involves an “awareness chime,” which suggests you download an app or tweak your computer to chime hourly.
The soothing sound will prompt you to take a pause and ask yourself if you’re doing what you’re supposed to do at that moment.
Bailey says that when the awareness chime emerges the first time, you’re likely to not be working on a productive task. “That’s okay—and even to be expected.”
Over time, you can train your mind to ask two or three questions at each chime, such as the quality of your attention flow, as well as which distractions to cut out from your schedule.
