CEO of The Boring Company Elon Musk has announced the opening of its first rapid transit tunnel, located beneath the city of Hawthorne, for 10 December via Twitter.
The two-mile tunnel is meant to be an underground public transportation system that aims to take passengers beneath the city’s congested roadways on electric platforms knows as “skates.” These “skates” are able to transport eight to 16 people in one passenger vehicle at speeds up to 155mph.
Musk also announced the “opening event” on the night of 10 December, followed by free rides for the public the next day. The tunnel, which was approved by the city of Hawthorne in 2017, will run beneath Crenshaw Boulevard and 120th Street. The project initiated in 2016 after Musk complained about Los Angeles’ traffic congestion.
The company has plans to further build the tunnel network and connect New York City to Washington DC through the “Loop.” Though The Boring Company is confident that it has enough resources to build this massive infrastructure, transportation experts question if the tunnels are the answer to the traffic congestion, and if the plans are likely to get knocked down by California’s lengthy environmental review process.
