From the fake sneaker market to Supreme boss impersonators and uncanny store setups, the world of counterfeits in China is so elaborate, it’s nearly impossible to discern what’s true or false anymore.
Now, the attorney of Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese contemporary artist renowned for her colorful polka-dot installations, claims that a number of bogus exhibitions displaying works that were advertised to be by Kusama and artist Takashi Murakami had appeared in four cities this year.
According to the Nikkei Asian Review, attorney Yoshifumi Onodera cites that a Chinese company has been setting up exhibitions showcasing forged artworks in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Wuhan, and Shanghai as early as April.
One show in a Shanghai mall, which charged visitors “roughly US$10” per ticket, has since been shut down. The others were apparently free to enter.
Onodera is investigating the identity of the event organizers, and aims to take legal action on both civil and criminal fronts. Murakami’s attorney, Hiroshi Kamiyama, says he also plans to file a lawsuit for the “extremely malicious” setups.
Have a look at some pictures of the faux exhibitions below.

Visited a Yayoi Kusama exhibit in Guangzhou that seemed off. Turns out that not only was completely fake, but the organizers have been producing them all over the country. https://t.co/jKCJKPzgCG pic.twitter.com/yVh8mXZe4G— cibomahto (@cibomahto) October 27, 2018
