The death of former Marvel Comics president Stan Lee on Monday had fans around the world feeling as if a part of them had dissipated for good. Tributes poured in from celebrities and artists, with The New York Times releasing a never-before-seen interview with the great man.
Now, Marvel Comics, the company where Stan Lee had invested most of his life work into, has delivered a tear-jerking tribute video with The Walt Disney Company to salute the life and career of Lee, as well as offer their “undying gratitude” to him.
The video starts off with a younger Stan Lee from some television pilot footage in 1968, who described that he didn’t just uncover what young people thought, “More importantly, I think I’ve learned about what young people are.”
“We’re going to try to present a voice that somebody will listen to. The voice is needed. We hope it will be ours.”
The homage also features interviews with Marvel Comics executives, who detail how Lee had transformed their lives and cemented the ways they work.
“He made [his work] feel intimate, and that anybody could belong to it,” says Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Comics. “We’re really lucky to have him really define us because it’s really given us something to move forward with.”
He also describes that Lee had a “P.T. Barnum aspect” that had transcended to the rest of the company. “It’s just something he infused the group with, and it’s something that people who followed him have been able to kind of keep that energy going.”
Lee might have created numerous characters and storylines, but Marvel Comics Vice President Tom Brevoort believes that “Stan’s best creation was always Stan.”
“As a creative figure, is one thing. Stan as a personality was able to somehow tap into his own larger-than-life, [yet] self-effacing and self-aggrandizing at the same time, personality.”
This isn’t an actual goodbye. “There will never be a world without Stan Lee,” says Sana Amanat, Vice President of Content. “He’s the heart of the Marvel Universe.”
It’s also not the last you’ll see of Lee. Before his passing, the creative force of Marvel Comics had filmed three cameos in Marvel films, including an appearance in Avengers 4.
