Ariana Grande’s upcoming music video isn’t a regular music video, it’s a cool music video. If the memes that have arisen from her breakup anthem, Thank U, Next, aren’t enough proof that the song might be the most relevant of these times, perhaps the visuals accompanying it will.
The star has teased that the Thank U, Next music video pays homage to evergreen teen comedy Mean Girls—and so far, it seems so fetch.
In addition to being given a ‘Regina George’ makeover, Grande invited original Mean Girls actors Jonathan Bennett, who played ‘Aaron Samuels’, and Bethany Byrd, who played the girl who “bought army pants and flip flops” because ‘Cady Heron’ was wearing them, to reprise their roles.
Filling in the shoes of Lindsay Lohan’s ‘Cady Heron’ is Grande’s Victorious co-star Elizabeth Gilles, who seems to be a dead ringer for the original actress after a touch of makeup magic.
‘Karen Smith’ will be played by Grande’s real best friend, Alexa Luria, and ‘Gretchen Wieners’ will be rebooted by Courtney Chipolone, who the singer previously referred to as her “cousin.”
Most recently, Grande posted a teaser of the upcoming video, confirming that more Mean Girls-themed tidbits, including the ‘Burn Book’, are underway.
Thank U, Next will feature Australian singer Troye Sivan, as well as pregnant YouTuber Colleen Ballinger, who quips, “One time, on Twitter, I heard Ariana was pregnant, so I got pregnant, so we could be pregnant at the same time.”
Bennett also spoofs one of the film’s most famous lines, and is heard saying, “Ariana Grande told me my hair looked sexy pushed back. She’s not wrong.”
Have a sneak peek of the video in the teaser and photos below.
