Imagine having your work fawned at by Madonna herself. Switzerland-born, Montreal-based street artist MissMe was perhaps touched for the very first time when the pop queen purchased one of her self-portraits from a series she calls Portrait of a Vandal.
Not only did Madonna buy the painting, but she also flaunted the piece in an Instagram story, which the star called, “exciting.”
The work depicts the masked artist, donning her trademark ‘Mickey Mouse’-inspired balaclava, pulling up her shirt to reveal her naked body.
MissMe, who describes herself as an “outlaw artist” exploring her struggles with “race, gender, society, and class,” details that the Portrait of a Vandal series boldly questions humanity’s patriarchal attitudes towards sex.
“To be born with a woman’s body is to bear the unsolicited burden of humanity’s unresolved attitudes towards sex… She’s taught to be ashamed of her sexuality and apologize for the power of her body. This is the portrait of an unapologetic soldier, The Portrait of a Vandal.”
Madonna’s first brush with MissMe’s works was on the streets of Lisbon last year. She then shared a photo of the mural, but not without tagging and following the artist on Instagram.
The two finally met in Morocco, as Madonna was there to celebrate her 60th birthday and MissMe had flown over for a photoshoot.
“She said, ‘Hi, I’m a great fan, but you know this already,’” the artist recounted to the Canadian Press. The star also enquired about purchasing a painting from MissMe, who kept her face hidden even during their meeting.
“As soon as I had one, I sent it to her,” MissMe said. “She was like, ‘Alright, I love it. I want it.’”
