Learning from others is one great way to grow in your artistic endeavors.
Just ask the 27 established artists who have shared the best and worst advice they have ever received, conveniently put together by Vulture.
The compilation includes words from performance artists Marina Abramović and Narcissister, as well as artists Joyce J. Scott and Hank Willis Thomas, among many others.
For instance, Abramović credits the worst advice she’d ever received to her mother, which goes to show, sometimes you should follow your heart instead of paying heed to words from your family. Her mother had apparently told her, “If you have to be an artist, at least marry a doctor, lawyer, or architect so you can live off of their income.”
Thankfully for Scott, the American artist’s mother gave her more comforting advice to “never stop.”
Thomas’ aunt, Claudine Brown, told him that he was incapable of holding a job he didn’t like—a remark he isn’t sure was meant as a compliment—though it likely spurred him to do what he loves and turn his passion into a career.
