Ariana Grande’s thank u, next recently smashed the record for most views on a YouTube video within in 24 hours, as well as retained its spot as the number one single on Billboard’s ‘Hot 100’ list for three weeks, making her the first woman to top the ranking since Adele’s 2015 hit, Hello.
These achievements are partly thanks to the copious chick flick references and cameos found in the thank u, next music video, which most notably pays tribute to evergreen teen comedy Mean Girls.
Aside from the nostalgia galore, it seems that a scene in the video also serves as a slap in the face of US president Donald Trump, as confirmed in a tweet by Grande’s mother, Joan Grande.
As the singer spoofs Reese Witherspoon’s character, ‘Elle Woods’, from 2001 film Legally Blonde, she is seen carrying the sixth edition of Immigration and Refugee Law and Policy, a casebook studied in US law schools. The reading materials, American Law and Search and Seizure, also appear in this scene.
According to publisher West Academic, this particular edition cites the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, which defers deportation for people who entered the US illegally as children, in addition to issues relating to asylum and “vulnerable children.”
Joan Grande affirmed a tweet claiming that the singer knows more about immigration law than POTUS does, replying, “Yes, SHE does, and no, HE doesn’t know anything!”
Check out the music video below, which has been sped forward to that subtle but brutal scene. Own your inner ‘Regina George’, Ariana Grande.
"like it's hard?" ... (quote from legally blonde) ... and yes SHE does, & no HE doesn't...... know anything! https://t.co/IS6Cqv0eVv— Joan Grande (@joangrande) November 30, 2018
