It’s 2018, when shredded artworks fetch millions of dollars, AI “painters” exist, and fictional “masterpieces” are worth more than some Old Master paintings.
The greatest art-related booby trap of the year might be the Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies portrait by fictional artist ‘Van Clomp’. The piece was sold for £15,000 (US$19,151) by East Bristol Auctions on Saturday.
The painting, which appeared in every episode in BBC’s sitcom ’Allo ’Allo, went to a buyer from Nouvion, France. Incidentally, the region was where the show was set, so it “was going home,” said auctioneer Andy Stowe.
In the sitcom, the portrait—which features a topless woman—was stolen and heavily pursued by the Germans, who wanted to gift it to Adolf Hitler. In order to evade inspection, the piece was rolled into German sausages and shoved down trousers.
The print was one of the few copies to have survived all nine seasons of the show, which ran between 1982 and 1992.
Stowe expressed that he was “overwhelmed” by the demand for the fictitious work, which caught the attention of some 25 bidders from around the world. Its previous owner had paid £4,000 (US$5,112) for it back in 2007.
“£15,000 (US$19,151) for a TV prop is just fantastic,” Stowe said. “It’s sold for more than most real artworks go for—there are Old Masters that can’t get that amount.”
