The famous ‘Hamburger Menu’—developed in the 1980s by interaction designer Norm Cox—is often criticized by UI/UX creatives for stashing away primary navigation items into a drawer of sorts, which means visitors won’t be able to access their intended features immediately.
However, UX is all about intuitiveness, and in spite of the button’s flaws, it’s still widely used today, since people have grown accustomed to it.
Cox turned 67 years old on 3 December, but instead of getting a cake this year, he found himself acquainted with the hamburger again, as fast food pioneer McDonald’s had revamped the hamburger icon on its website to “resemble a McDonald’s burger.”
For one day, customers were able to order burgers via a redesigned ‘Hamburger Menu’ on the mobile versions of McDonald’s website and its Reddit page. Additionally, Reddit’s mascot, ‘Snoo’, was dressed as the ‘Hamburglar’ to commemorate the designer’s contributions to the internet.
Cox also featured in McDonald’s birthday video, shown below—and worry not, he was treated to a real, 3D burger.
