If you want to express your disdain for something, a regular-sized middle finger isn’t going to do the trick—which is why a man has decided to broadcast his contempt for his town by paying a grand sum to flip it off.
Channeling a giant F-U to his town, Tom Pelkey has commissioned a US$4,000 middle finger sculpture to retaliate against a 10-year dispute to get a permit for him to build a garage.
The massive gesture, weighing at 700 pounds, is meant for town leaders including Westford Selectboard and Development Review Board, who rejected his plan to build the garage, which would have allowed him to relocate his truck repair and recycling businesses to his property.
“I haven’t been treated fairly at all,” Pelkey told Boston.com. “[So] I was sitting at a bar and said to my wife, ‘Hey, I want to get a statue made of a middle finger, and I’m going to put it up on the lawn.’”
For better effect, Pelkey surrounded the statue with floodlights as a reminder of the way town leaders infuriated him.
The best part is that officials will not be able to do anything about the sculpture, as it honors the man’s right to free speech. In fact, the monument falls under public art, which Pelkey said was the “most wonderful thing I’ve ever been told in my life.”
Pelkey disclaimed that the message of the finger wasn’t pointed at neighbors and residents of the town. “I’m not trying to cause hate and animosity to the people who live in that town, because there’s very good people in that town. All the people are very good people.”
Except for the ones the finger is up against, it seems.
