Take caution if you are guilty of incessantly sharing memes—an attempt at a joke has resulted in the arrest of two journalists.
Al Wakeel News, a publication from Jordan, landed itself in hot soup on Saturday after publishing a remixed image of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper painting.
The digital edit saw the replacement of Jesus Christ with Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe, better known as Salt Bae.
Unfortunately, cybercrime authorities in Jordan took issue with the meme, claiming that it was offensive to both Christians and Muslims in the country.
Despite removing the image and apologizing for the unhappiness caused, the people behind the visual—publisher Mohammed al-Wakeel and an editor—were charged for “incitement of sectarian and religious strife.”
On Monday, both journalists were questioned by authorities, who detained them at the Jwaideh Correctional and Rehabilitation Center. To add salt to their wounds, their request for bail was denied on Tuesday.
