Madonna was well ahead of her time as an advocate of sex positivity. “I told the press, ‘I was not ashamed,’ and this became headline news,” she recently recounted on Instagram.
In the post, she shares a black-and-white, nude throwback photo of herself as a 19-year-old who was trying to make ends meet in NYC. The words, “Rebel Heart,” are written across her chest.
“I modeled for art schools around the city to pay the rent. Painting, drawing and photography classes,” Madonna wrote.
Sadly, she also remembered how publications got hold of the photos following her fame to “exploit” her and paint her in a promiscuous light.
Her declaration, “I am not afraid,” eventually became the highlight of Andy Warhol’s 1985 art collaboration with Keith Haring, Untitled. The pop queen now owns four of the artists’ paintings.
“You cannot stop art by trying to shame it,” she reminded her followers. “Creation always wins.”
Madonna continues to own her stance about feminine beauty, and has carried her views down to her daughter, Lourdes Leon, who is a true beacon of body positivity.
