You Can Stay In This Hotel Room For Free, Provided You Get Off The Internet
By Izza Sofia, 25 Jan 2019

A hotel in Gothenburg, Sweden has created a new policy that will determine the rate for a particular room based on how much time you spend on social media.
With the number of social media users reaching 3.196 billion, Hotel Bellora has collaborated with Swedish insurance company Länsförsäkringar to launch a new concept that encourages guests to reconnect with the reality.
The Check Out Suite in Hotel Bellora encourages visitors to spend more time with their families and friends, instead of online. The room features ‘The Skärmfri’, a screen-free smart lamp, that tracks the amount of time you spend on social media.
When visitors connect their phones to the hotel’s Wi-Fi, the lamp calculates the time they spend on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
The lamp starts out with a white light but turns red once you have passed the recommended screen time of 30 minutes. The time you spend on social media thus affects how much you have to pay for the room.
If guests don’t use their phones at all, they can stay free-of-charge for this specific suite. Head of communications at Länsförsäkringar Lisa Höglund said the ‘Screen Help’ concept aims to improve digital health, as well as reward families that manage to stay away from their devices..
