Following Criticism, Apple Will Now Pay ‘#ShotOniPhone’ 2019 Competition Winners
By Izza Sofia, 29 Jan 2019
Apple has changed tune from its original plan and has decided to compensate the winners of its ‘#ShotOniPhone’ 2019 competition following a barrage of complaints by photographers and Apple users over its terms of use.
Photographers who succeed in winning the contest shall be eligible to receive an unspecified licensing fee for the use of their photos and creations on billboards and other forms of marketing. This is a marked change from before, where there was no indication that Apple had ever intended to offer any licensing fees, or any monetary compensation whatsoever for the winning photos.
The competition started on 22 January and is slated to end on 7 February at 11.59PM PT. The results will be decided by a panel of professional judges, including established photographers and a select group of Apple employees with relevant photographic expertise.
In an updated press release, Apple reiterates its stand that artists deserve payment for their work. Photographers who reach the final group of top ten winning photos will be officially eligible for licensing fees or compensation for the use of their images on Apple’s marketing platforms.
