Chelsea Clinton has hit out at internet trolls for spreading a photo of a woman falsely labeled as her mother and 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
An image had been circulated by the “right-wing internet” that portrayed a Caucasian man and woman at a costume party. The woman—seen wearing blackface—was accredited as Hillary Clinton, while her shirtless companion—decked in overalls and a straw hat—was named as husband and former president Bill Clinton.
The photo was deceptively matched with the caption, “Bill and Hillary at a costume party many years before politics.”
Their daughter has since hit out at the hoax, tweeting that the duo look, “nothing like my parents… The woman’s eyes aren’t even blue.”
She also emphasized that, “Blackface is never acceptable. It’s not complicated,” further urging parents to “teach our kids about the racist history of minstrelsy and blackface.”
For context, Chelsea Clinton attached a link to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture’s website, which covers the gravity of such racist caricatures that have played out for centuries in the nation.
“By distorting the features and culture of African Americans—including their looks, language, dance, deportment and character—white Americans were able to codify whiteness across class and geopolitical lines as its antithesis,” the Smithsonian explained.
Enslaved Africans were also stereotyped as “lazy, ignorant, superstitious, hypersexual, and prone to thievery and cowardice,” it added.
In a similar vein, it looks like Gucci needs to take a leaf out of Chelsea Clinton’s book, as the luxury retailer recently came under fire for retailing a sweater that seems to portray blackface.
