Contrary to what some might believe, Ariana Grande isn’t perpetually in her trademark high ponytail.
After a tattoo fiasco where her 7 Rings ink had been read as “small BBQ grill” in Japanese, and then mistranslated as “Japanese BBQ finger” in a touchup, the singer took to Twitter to post a photo of her kindergartener self to poke fun at her own appearance.
“If I’m [being] honest, this is still exactly what I look like without lashes and my pony…” she tweeted. “I’m 25. I was five here. The only difference now is that hand now says, ‘BBQ grill finger.’”
The image shows a young Grande with full curls—a vast difference from the straight tresses most are used to seeing—prompting fans to ask if she still maintains her natural locks.
They were not disappointed; the pop star responded with a clip of herself running her fingers through her wet curls. Another Ariana Grande-related mystery solved.
While Hollywood has an enduring reputation for its unrealistic representations of women’s bodies, celebrities have started retaliating by insisting on going retouch-free and makeup-free in photoshoots. Grande’s affirmation of what’s real and what’s not is one of many that could help spark a new generation of young women who are comfortable with the way they look.
