Barbie turns the golden age of 60 on 9 March. Had she lived her life as a human, the ever-smiling doll would be aging beautifully with visible laughter lines and gray tresses.
To celebrate the doll’s birthday, London-based illustrator and designer Phaedra Peer has aged up the doll to her actual age, envisioning the icon as if she hadn’t had plastic surgery—or been manufactured using plastic.
“We should be celebrating natural beauty,” Peer describes.
The artist finds her forte in reimagining female pop culture icons, such as Disney princesses, as women who are comfortable with their bodies, identities and sexuality.
