Kim Kardashian West has once again been called out for “blackfishing,” this time over an illustration that she shared on social media.
On Wednesday, the reality television star uploaded an artwork by British fashion designer Hayden Williams, whose sketch features a dark-skinned woman wearing an Alaïa leopard print bodysuit that Kardashian West had donned in Paris the day before.
While fans were expected to fixate on her outfit, many called out the artwork for supposedly making Kardashian West look “black,” despite the fact that her father was Armenian-American, and that her mother has Dutch, English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry.
To followers, the socialite’s circulation of the image was somehow perpetuating the misconception that she was of Black African ancestry. Some also said she was “blackfishing,” a fairly new term coined to describe people who artificially darken their skin in order to pass off as African.
“Aaliyah looks pretty in this drawing,” Twitter user ‘celestialselg’ snarkily commented. “She wants to be North so bad,” said ‘KaylaHunter3’, referring to North West, the daughter of Kanye and Kim Kardashian West.
One Twitter user, ‘Negroologist’, even lightened the drawing, saying that he had “fixed” it.
Williams, a black man, has since expressed his bafflement at the negative criticism over his artwork. After all, it is the outfit that is supposed to shine here, not the model, who could easily be anyone.
“My art is NOT meant to be an exact replica of the people I illustrate,” he commented on his Instagram. “They are not portraits, but fashion illustrations, and are STYLIZED interpretations of who I choose to illustrate.”
“Some of you are putting way too much emphasis on skin tones of my art, when my art has ALWAYS had variations of even the same subjects over the years.”
Kardashian West has not responded to the backlash.
