By Yoon Sann Wong, 12 Mar 2019
International Women’s Day might have passed on 8 March, but this ad by Australian media company Mamamia—dedicated to making “the world a better place for women and girls”—that spotlights the reality of a proportion of women across the globe is continuing to make its rounds on the internet.
‘If A Man Lived Like A Woman For A Day’ offers a perspective of life through a woman’s eyes.
While the behaviors depicted in this short film definitely do not apply to all males, it spotlights the reality of a portion of the world’s females that seem to resonate among a share of viewers.
Since its upload last Wednesday, the short film has garnered close to 10 million views on Facebook.
On the social media platform, user ‘Leigh Taylor’ responded, “It was funny… until it wasn’t.”
“Can we get this played in all cinemas before the movie, during the NRL, AFL and ARL live telecasts and at the grounds, before every Netflix/Stan movie and ads on Foxtel sports etc etc ???” commented Facebook user ‘Fipe Preuss’.
‘Mark Campbell’ explained in another comment, “Whilst I know this will confronting for most people to watch. I felt it necessary to be shared because I know these issues to be true.”
“I’ve observed majority of this behaviour happening to the females around me, either in university, the workplace or on the streets. I think they did a great job here in portraying a rough idea of the daily struggles females go through, but as we all know it’s still no where near the reality of experiencing it for yourself.”
“I was raised with two brothers, no sisters, but we were taught to be kind, fair and gentlemen to all of the women in our lives. And I know if any of the three of us came across this behaviour being put upon any of the women in our lives that we would stand up and say that it’s not okay. Because that’s what real men do.”
‘Tina Chamberlain’ left a more lighthearted response, “His Spanex need to be WAYYY tighter lol.”
The film concludes with the statistics that “87% of Australian women have experienced verbal or physical street harassment” and that “1 in 4 women have been sexually harassed at work.”
