Marvel Tweaks ‘Endgame’ Poster After Being Criticized For Omitting Danai Gurira
By Izza Sofia, 15 Mar 2019
Marvel Studios released the movie poster for the highly-anticipated Avengers: Endgame movie, but eagle-eyed fans weren’t having it.
The promotional artwork featured all 13 characters of its main cast; however, only 12 names were printed on it. Actress Danai Gurira, known for her character ‘Okoye’ in Black Panther, was not credited at the top, although her name was included in the small print below.
It did not take long for fans to call Marvel out. The company then reacted swiftly, reposting a second version of the poster. However, it did not apologize for the previous mishap, and only offered a brief response on Twitter.
“She should have been up there all this time. Check out the official Marvel Studios’ #AvengersEndgame poster,” Marvel tweeted.
Gurira’s fans were offended that her name had been excluded from the first poster, especially when she was the only black woman featured in the image. Additionally, her name was the only one that was left out from the top.
A Twitter user commented, “How can you have the only woman of color in the poster, but not her name? Everyone else’s name is there but hers. It’s an insult.”
Other Twitter users applauded Marvel for reacting quickly. “The internet wins again. Voiced our disappointment and Marvel reacted swiftly. Danai Gurira’s name has been added to the billing on the poster,” a Twitter user said.
Take a look at the poster below. Avengers: Endgame hits theaters 26 April.
And I know this is white knighting at its finest but the only black woman on the poster and the only one who doesn’t get her name put on the poster? If she’s deserving enough to have her face on the poster, she’s deserving enough to have her name #DanaiGurira #Endgame— Connor Cosmo Lawlor (@Calbody) March 14, 2019
Um... why is the ONLY person who appears on this poster that is NOT credited Danai Gurira? I’m pretty sure that needs rectifying quickly Marvel! Mainly because she deserves her name up there just as much as everyone else. And also, because Okoye is Queen 🙌🏻— Emily Jayne (@EmiJaye) March 14, 2019
You didn’t have enough room to put Danai’s name on the top of the poster? pic.twitter.com/Lk8wNShpCl— Natty (@Natty_Danai) March 14, 2019
It looks bad that she’s the only one in the damn poster not in the top credit. BP earned Marvel 3 Oscars! Okoye is representing BP, she should be in the top credit.— Natty (@Natty_Danai) March 14, 2019
