The Economist Intelligence Unit has released the results of its annual ‘Worldwide Cost of Living’ survey, which reveal that the title of most expensive city has been awarded to three cities.
For the first time in the survey’s 30-year history, the title is shared by three cities—Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Using New York as a benchmark, the report drew its observations based on 133 cities across 160 yardsticks like utility bills, rent, transportation and food. It also determined whether the prices for these items had increased or decreased over time.
According to the results, Singapore retains its first spot for the fifth time, while Paris has moved up one notch from last year to take the top spot as well. Hong Kong has climbed three places from its 2018 ranking as fourth on the list.
Other cities in the top 10 ranking are mostly in Europe and Asia, with Los Angeles and New York being the only North American cities to make the list.
New York takes up the seventh spot together with Copenhagen and Seoul, while Los Angeles and Tel Aviv have both come in 10th place.
On the other end of the spectrum, the most inexpensive cities to live in include Caracas and Damascus.
