Apple’s New Credit Card Reminds People Of Fyre Festival’s ‘Magnises’ Card
By Izza Sofia, 28 Mar 2019
The announcement of Apple’s credit card, Apple Card, has stirred some pretty unsavory memories of an event that had gone horribly wrong, the Fyre Festival.
The tech giant’s physical credit card, which will be made available in countries that do not have Apple Pay support, is a titanium card with the Apple logo, no credit card number, no signature, no CVV and no expiration date. The new Apple credit card is stylishly simple, with all the required information stored in the iOS Wallet app.
Twitter erupted as many who had caught the Fyre Festival documentary compared it to ‘Magnises’, the credit card/social card scam created by Fyre Festival’s Billy McFarland, who conceptualized the scheme before being indicted for setting the whole event up for failure.
Internet users argued that, similar to the physical Apple Card, one of the greatest appeals of ‘Magnises’ metal card was its aesthetic, which flaunted “the whole cool factor”.
While a lot of Twitter users poked fun at the aesthetic of the Apple card, it is worth noting that it functions nothing like the ‘Magnises’. At the 25 March event, Apple reiterated that it would not be able to track tracking users’ transaction data due to the tight security policy of Goldman Sachs, the bank that is helping to make Apple Card possible.
Apple elaborated that Goldman Sachs does not sell leak any personal information to third parties for marketing purposes, including Apple itself. This goes for both the digital and physical cards—Apple promises that its titanium card will be “more secure” than other physical cards in the market.
