Samsung Gives Out US$2K Galaxy Fold For Good Reviews, But Phones Soon Fall Apart
By Izza Sofia, 19 Apr 2019
Samsung’s Galaxy Fold was much raved-about since the company teased the pioneering bendable phone years ago. It has since been launched, but it might not have lived up to expectations.
When the device was delivered to journalists for reviews, many of them, including editors from Bloomberg and CNBC, encountered serious issues with their review units.
According to CNBC’s Steve Kovach, the display of the phone started flickering.
Aside from the phone’s display, another worrying factor seems to be the durability of its plastic screen. Samsung notified users not to remove a “protective layer/film,” but due to the lack of clear instructions, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and YouTuber Marques Brownlee tore the layer off anyway.
After removing the plastic, Gurman stated that parts of the screen started blacking out to the point where only an unusable sliver remained. Brownlee too had a similar issue after he peeled off the piece, as he thought it was a screen protector.
The Galaxy Fold is retailing for about US$2,000, and with such a hefty price tag, it is worrying to see the devices failing in its first few batches. Hopefully, the problems will not plague mass-ready batches when they roll out on 26 April.

The screen on my Galaxy Fold review unit is completely broken and unusable just two days in. Hard to know if this is widespread or not. pic.twitter.com/G0OHj3DQHw— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) April 17, 2019
The phone comes with this protective layer/film. Samsung says you are not supposed to remove it. I removed it, not knowing you’re not supposed to (consumers won’t know either). It appeared removable in the left corner, so I took it off. I believe this contributed to the problem. pic.twitter.com/fU646D2zpY— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) April 17, 2019
It has gotten progressively worse. Here’s the latest, photo taken now. One photo is from last night. Other photo is earlier this morning. pic.twitter.com/qzmlM0a3pL— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) April 17, 2019
PSA: There's a layer that appears to be a screen protector on the Galaxy Fold's display. It's NOT a screen protector. Do NOT remove it.— Marques Brownlee (@MKBHD) April 17, 2019
I got this far peeling it off before the display spazzed and blacked out. Started over with a replacement. pic.twitter.com/ZhEG2Bqulr
