With the iconic 856-year-old Notre Dame closed for repair works, Monsignor Patrick Chauvet, rector of Notre Dame, has made a crucial suggestion for temporary arrangements to that worshippers have a place for refuge in the meantime.
“We mustn’t say, ‘The cathedral is closed for five years and that’s it,’” he told France’s CNews. “Can I not build an ephemeral cathedral on the esplanade [in front of Notre-Dame]?"
Monsignor Chauvet also added that the temporary wooden cathedral can be "beautiful, symbolic and attractive.”
So far, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has given her approval to the tentative replacement.
The Notre Dame caught fire on Monday due to ongoing renovations. Its damage has since been attributed to an electrical short-circuit.
