‘GoT’ Fans Can Thank This Café—Not Starbucks—For That Infamous Coffee Cup
By Izza Sofia, 08 May 2019
Contrary to what people think, the infamous coffee cup that appeared on the recent episode of Game of Thrones was not from Starbucks.
According to Metro, the cup that appeared in the fourth episode of season eight of HBO’s hit series was from a local coffee shop in Northern Ireland. The establishment, called Paper Cup, is based in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, which is near the filming ground of Game of Thrones.
Fans went into a frenzy when the drinkware accidentally made an appearance on a table near ‘Daenerys Targaryen’. The famous cup was wrapped in a brown sleeve with the café’s logo.
Paper Cup’s owner, John McKinney, said that the GoT cast would come by often, specifically remembering Emilia Clarke as she often ordered bagels from the shop.
“She would have them a lot,” McKinney recalled. Clarke would usually wait in the establishment for crew members to arrive before heading together with them to sets.
TV producer Bernadette “Bernie” Caulfield and actress Sophie Turner were also patrons of the store, with Turner getting takeout cups while in costume.
Because many thought the cup was from Starbucks, the major chain took the opportunity to push its new ‘Dragon Drink’ that is made with dragonfruit and coconut milk.
It also expressed surprise through a tweet that ‘Daenerys’ didn’t order the ‘Dragon Drink’.
The small coffee shop’s owner, however, wasn’t happy that Starbucks had taken all the credit for the appearance of his coffee cups. “I think it’s bloody disgusting,” he said.
I THOUGHT THEY WERE JOKING WHEN THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS A COFFEE CUP IN ONE OF THE SCENES IN THE NEW EPISODE SO I PLAYED IT BACK AND OH MY GOD I AM LAUGHING SO HARD— 💜 Iris 💜 (@irisvicencio) May 6, 2019

I cannot get over how the makers of #GameOfThrones put fans on blast for not having expensive enough TVs to fully appreciate their visually perfect show then this week there’s actually enough light to see the screen and their sloppy asses fully left a 2019 coffee cup in the shot. pic.twitter.com/gzUjhkn9xY— Jillian Sederholm (@JillianSed) May 6, 2019
TBH we're surprised she didn't order a Dragon Drink.— Starbucks Coffee (@Starbucks) May 6, 2019
