2019 could spur a fear of not just heights, but also slides, as another design has been canceled due to multiple casualties caused.
Stretching 38 meters (125 feet), the “longest urban slide” in Spain isn’t nearly as long as the supposed lengthiest outdoor slide in the world, but it has also resulted in people getting wounded.
The slide, part of the Costa del Sol town of Estepona’s expansion plan for the Los Ninos Park area, was designed as a shortcut between two streets. It would allow adults and children to reach Calle Eslovaquia to Avenida Reina Sofia in seconds, instead of making them take a 10-minute walk.
Unfortunately, its steep gradient ranging between 32 and 34 degrees has threatened the safety of some passengers. Twitter user ‘AzulDebonisB’, for instance, said she flew “two meters” (6.6 feet) in the air and hurt herself, but the police nearby simply laughed at the accident.
Another social media user calls the installation “a danger to citizens,” while one jokes about dentists “rubbing their hands” over a possible financial avenue.
Footage of people soaring off the slide has also circulated online, forcing the City Council of Esponia to tentatively close the travel route for “additional review” within 24 hours of its opening on Thursday.
In a statement, the city justifies that the slide’s design was certified by a “specialist installation company,” and that instructions were displayed near the area to guide people on riding the slide safely.
The signage also forbade people from lying down on the slide, and said it was necessary for them to keep their arms within the installation while being seated. Additionally, no two people could take the slide at the same time.
The council adds that the footage being shared online “corresponds to an isolated event,” and that over 1,000 people went on the slide on Thursday without trouble.
Nevertheless, the city will review the design again “to provide maximum guarantees” for future slide-goers.
