Amnesty’s Syria Ads Prove Humankind Can Be Worse Than Natural Disasters
By Yimin Huang, 14 May 2019

Amnesty International is known for its provocative ads for human rights. In its recent campaign for the freedom and democracy of Syria after Bashar al-Assad crushed the uprising with force, war zones where housing and huge blocks of land are destroyed have been depicted in ads.
The poignant tagline reads, “In Syria the worst natural disaster is mankind.” The visuals were designed by advertising agency VMLY&R SCL from Santiago, Chile.
In each of the three ads, a different natural disaster is referenced, showing the number of years the region has not experienced a natural disaster but still ends up in ruins.
For instance, one on hurricanes is captioned with, “1319 years without hurricanes,” showing the irony between the lack of natural disaster and the state of the land depicted.
The other graphics reference tsunamis and earthquakes respectively, with the same effect. The striking images prompt viewers to see how mankind has often abused power to create destruction on a far larger scale than nature.
