Calvin Klein has addressed criticism about a controversial ad it posted last week featuring supermodel Bella Hadid and virtual social media influencer Lil Miquela.
In the 30-second clip, Hadid shares a slow kiss with the famous robot, who touts a following of 1.5 million fans on Instagram.
Hadid openly identifies as heterosexual, leading fans to wonder why Calvin Klein did not cast one of the many celebrities from the LGBTQ+ community.
The apparent problem seems more glaring due to the campaign’s message of being honest and vulnerable. The ad is part of Calvin Klein’s new ‘I Speak My Truth in #MyCalvins’ movement, where stars including Shawn Mendes were encouraged to share personal stories.
Isn’t she one of the heteroes like .. besides the fact that it’s her and a computer drawn girl like... I could b wrong but isn’t bella a full straighty— sophisticated (@friend_of_a) May 17, 2019
There are plenty of real LGBTQ Models that could have been used. #noexcuse— Hillary Halsten (@hills02) May 17, 2019
Since the backlash, Calvin Klein has released a statement on Twitter, apologizing for “any offence we caused.”
“The concept of our ‘#MyCalvins’ campaign is to promote freedom of expression for a wide range of identities, including a spectrum of gender and sexual identities…” the label explains. “We understand and acknowledge how featuring someone who identifies as heterosexual in a same-sex kiss could be perceived as queerbaiting.”
Calvin Klein stresses that it was not its intention to misrepresent the LGBTQ+ community, and “regrets” any hurt caused.
Here at CALVIN KLEIN, we welcome all types of constructive feedback from our community. We see your comments and we appreciate them.
