Insta-Worthy Shakes Are Being Taken Off Menus Due To Health Risks They Present
By Yimin Huang, 20 May 2019
‘Freakshakes’ are known for being both Instagrammable and notoriously sugar-laden. They are milkshakes that are stacked with the sweetest treats you can think of, from Oreos to doughnuts, M&Ms, popcorn and more.
It is no doubt the drink can be addictive for both the eyes and the palate. However, in the latest episode of Tricks of the Restaurant Trade, it has been revealed to contain a whopping 95g (3.35oz) of sugar on average, more than thrice the recommended daily sugar intake for anyone over the age of 11.
This can cause severe damage to the body as specialist paediatric dietician Nicole Rothband notes, “you can get damage to your heart from type two diabetes and kidney damage,” according to LADbible.
Since then, UK restaurant Toby Carvey has removed all ‘Freakshakes’ from its outlets. However, TGI Fridays, Byron Burger and Frankie and Benny’s still sell the sugary drinks.
Frankie and Benny’s, though, is looking to eventually wipe the items out from the menu.
Viewers have also taken to Twitter to express a variety of opinions on the issue of sugar content in the milkshakes, with some praising the show for exposing their health risks, while others argue that the information is expected and ‘Freakshakes’ should not be banned for the occasional guilty pleasure.
It is uncertain if we will still see ‘Freakshakes’ making their photogenic appearance on social media for long.
Horrified at the amount of sugar in these #freakshakes - 95 grams. There is no need to have that on sale, this country has a massive obesity crisis especially in kids. Should be banned. @TGIFridaysUK @frankienbennys #tricksoftherestauranttrade— Stu (@romford_stu) May 13, 2019
#secretsoftherestauranttrade doesn't make a rocket scientist to work out that freakshakes contain lots of sugar, why do we have to remove everything off menus, everything we eat and drink is bad for you, depending on what day of the week it is— karen bateup (@pinkdiamond71) May 19, 2019
Thank god for #tricksoftherestauranttrade reporting on sugar in #freakshakes, I was going to swop it for a salad. Next week can you tell me if there's alcohol in my wine? #wasteofairtime #statingtheobvious— Luxxy (@lollipop272) May 13, 2019
