Coca-Cola Brings Back Failed Retro ‘New Coke’ In Honor Of ‘Stranger Things 3’
By Izza Sofia, 24 May 2019
Coca-Cola has announced that its 1985 ‘New Coke’ formula is making a comeback in partnership with Netflix’s Stranger Things.
Despite the beverage being a flub, the company has resurrected the old concoction in honor of Stranger Things 3, which is set in the summer of ’85—the very summer ‘New Coke’ was released.
Coca-Cola had to retrieve the forgotten recipe from its safe, as well as tweak it logo and red hue, to mirror how its cola looked and tasted like three decades ago.
According to AP News, Coca-Cola switched up the recipe for the cola during the summer of 1985. However, it turned out to be a marketing mistake, as the drink did not sell as popularly as expected. ‘New Coke’ was discontinued after only 79 days.
Netflix’s head of global partner marketing, Barry Smyth, says that the partnership allows the streaming giant to reach out to a bigger audience via Coca-Cola, “one of the most recognizable brands in the world,” and in a “deeply authentic way.”
A limited count of ‘New Coke’ cans were re-released on 23 May. ‘New Coke’ will also make its appearance in a couple of episodes from Stranger Things 3.
On top of that, the company will also be releasing limited edition Stranger Things can designs in phases, including a 16-oz can of the original 1985 design with the series’ logo, as well as a 16-oz Coke Zero Sugar can that is printed with an upside-down Stranger Things illustration.
