Thanks to AI, the famous Mona Lisa can be seen talking, tilting her head, and changing up her smile.
Samsung’s AI lab in Russia has successfully turned Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous Mona Lisa, as well as famous faces such as Marilyn Monroe and Albert Einstein, into striking moving images.
The researchers behind this technology created these moving art solely with still images of the subjects. It is the next step to “deep fakes,” and the prospect of people creating fake videos using just photos is chilling.
The scientists took moving facial features of people and “mapped” them over these photos and artworks through a technique called “puppeteering.”
For the Mona Lisa, the team shows how the animated painting differs when melded with footage of different people. The authors of the study describe that the method would create “highly realistic and personalized talking head models” of paintings and people alike.
However, many concerns were raised about how such a technology could end up in the wrong hands, especially in the world of political propaganda. In 2018, lawmakers in Washington highlighted that bogus videos were a threat to national security.
The iconic smile of the Mona Lisa has enchanted art lovers for centuries. This time, you get to enjoy it in a new light.
